The thistle is iconic in Scotland. You can find it on glassware, on belt buckles, on earrings and brooches, and even as the focus in the artwork of many artists around Scotland. But when other countries have flowers such as the rose, or the daffodil, how did Scotland acquire the spiny, jaggy thistle?
Every summer Springwood Park, in Kelso, hosts the Annual Border Union Show. This happens on the last Friday and Saturday of July each year, and this will be Tartan Plus Tweed’s third year attending the show. This show is an incredible place for families and friends to check out, and attracts people from all over the borders, and even into Northumberland.
A traditional Burns Supper is the celebration of the life and poetry of Robert Burns. The first Burns Suppers were held in memorium of Robert Burns’ death on July 21 at the end of the 18th century. These dinners were held by his friends in Ayrshire. As the popularity for Burns Suppers progressed, the First Burns Club was organized in 1808 by merchants in Greenock and these more widely-known suppers were held on the anniversary of his death, January 25th.
On the afternoon of Sunday 7th September we took this delightful circular walk from Leaderfoot Bridge to Earlston called the Diamond Jubilee Walk which was opened in 2012.
The round trip was 8.5 miles according to our “iPhone”. The Earlston Paths Group have done an outstanding job creating this interesting walk. As we meandered through the pine forest on the first leg of the walk along side the River Leader, we came upon a seat made from the river stone which was a nice spot for a wee breather.
Heathergems is a gorgeous jewellery line made in Pitlochry, Scotland. It’s extremely unique as there is no other jewellery in the world that is made similarly to the way Heathergems is made. The idea for the jewellery came about during the Second World War.
