One of the most common questions that we get in the shop is “What Tartan Can I Wear?” There are many people that believe the tartan you should wear is that of your mother’s maiden name. This tradition began many years ago when men left the family home to fight in battle. Often times the men would die at war, so it was only fitting for the child to keep the same surname as the mother. In recent times, many people choose to wear the tartan of their father’s surname. It only seems logical to wear the Gunn Tartan when your surname is Gunn. If your surname has no connection to a family or clan, then I would suggest to look further back to your grand parents or great-grandparents surnames, and find a tartan their name may be linked to.
