Before the Reformation of 1560, Christmas in Scotland was celebrated in much the same way it was across Catholic Europe. It involved feasts, games, and gifts. In Scotland, it was called “Yule” which has Pagan roots. The word refers to the mid-winter’s celebration of the winter’s solstice.
This all changed when Oliver Cromwell came to power.
It is only 13 days until Christmas, and we are all starting to get into the Christmas spirit. This is when I start to listen to Christmas songs, and watch Christmas movies. I light my Christmas scented candles from McKelvie Candles, decorate the Christmas tree, and start wrapping everyone’s gifts.
Only a few more weeks! Maybe you have all the gifts organised and wrapped. You might be getting your Christmas tree up, and all of the decorations out of the attic. You might even have begun planning your Christmas menu! But when your pulling out all the decorations, and have the stockings hung with care – Ooft! What about the stocking fillers!? Don’t worry! We have got some great ideas for everyone’s stockings.
Not Long Now! And Christmas will be here before we know it. 4 short weeks to go but still plenty of time to order your highland wear gifts. Kilts, Jackets, Waistcoats, and all the accessories are fabulous gifts at Christmas time. A new sporran or a new pair of ghillie brogues aren’t always the things that men rush out to buy, which make them a great gift for giving. Here are some items that you can get just in time for the special day.
We are starting our Christmas countdown, and we are just over 6 weeks until the joyous day. Do you have your gifts sorted? If not we will list some great gifts for your loved ones (or even yourself!) over the next few weeks. This week we are all about textiles. Living in the Scottish Borders we cannot deny the history and presence of textiles. It is all around us from the mills that are still standing the test of time, to the Heriot Watt – School of Textiles right in Galashiels. Regardless of your budget, we have the right textile gifts for you!
Last month the Scotland’s Trade Fair has been in Glasgow at the SECC. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to see what’s new in the world of highland wear and gifts. It is also a great chance for us to bring some new products in the shop, and to Galashiels, just in time for Christmas. Here is a sneak peek of some new products that will be coming soon to Tartan Plus Tweed. And don’t forget to check our facebook page for up to date posts of all our new products.
